If you drive a car, then you more than likely have car insurance, and, if you don’t, then you should! However, not only is it important to maintain adequate levels of basic car insurance, but you also want to have a special kind of coverage in place- a kind of coverage that people all too often overlook. This type of coverage is known as underinsured motorist coverage.
In case you are not familiar with this type of coverage, it basically exists to protect you in the event that you are involved in an accident with someone who does not have adequate levels of insurance. This- being involved in an accident with an underinsured person- is a very common thing and, without the right coverage on your end, you could end up paying the consequences for someone else’s lack of responsibility.
Of course, you may be wondering what you would do if you were involved in an accident with a driver who was not just underinsured but totally uninsured. In this case, you’d want to have another, similar type of insurance, known as uninsured driver insurance, which protects you in this exact situation.
Hopefully, you will not be involved in an accident anytime soon. And, if you are, hopefully it will be with a driver who maintains proper levels of insurance. Just in case, though, it is certainly a smart idea to get and maintain both underinsured and uninsured driver insurance to protect yourself.
